Roofing the Smoothie King Center, a New Orleans Landmark
An arena for all conditions
Set in the central business district of New Orleans, the Smoothie King Center hosts indoor sporting events, concerts, and conventions. The arena roof is highly visible from street level and exposed to the region’s heat, humidity, and severe winds and storms.
An aluminum-clad answer
With these challenges in mind, the design team chose the Siplast Veral Aluminum System. The two-ply, SBS-modified bitumen roof is energy-efficient and highly resilient, and the foil facing met the designers’ vision for a uniform, rolling roof surface.
Since its completion, the Siplast Veral Aluminum System has withstood the harsh New Orleans climate, including Hurricane Katrina, and provides the arena with one of its distinctive features.
Facts:
- Smoothie King Center accommodates over 17,000 spectators and is home to the NBA’s New Orleans Pelicans.
- Siplast Veral Aluminum roofing meets the reflectance requirements of the U.S. Energy Star program and qualifies for LEED certification points.
