Roofing the Award-winning LEGO© House
For the complex roof of the award-winning LEGO® House in Billund, Denmark, the design and construction team turned to BMI Group for its expertise and integrated roofing system.
Building to scale
LEGO® House, designed by Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG), is set in the Danish city where the famous brick was invented. Visitors and fans of all ages can explore, play and learn in a fully immersive house filled with 25 million LEGO bricks.
The building follows the dimensional ratios of LEGO bricks (i.e. 1 × 2, 2 × 2, 2 × 4), which meant that everything, including the measurements of the installed products and the layout of the roof, had to comply with these proportions.
Innovative roofing solutions
BMI Group specializes in fully integrated systems for flat, pitched and complex roofs. For LEGO House, BMI Group manufactured the membranes and installed the roofing products, as well as provided planning for the complex logistical process.
The installation of the insulation boards had to be made on preheated bitumen membranes, which required a just-in-time delivery of materials to ensure a continuous installation. To lift the materials to the multi-tiered roof, a crane spanned distances of more than 30 meters.
- LEGO House has 21 flat roofs totalling 4,589 square meters, all in LEGO brick colors.
- The project has earned numerous honors, including the 2018 Danish Design Award, Good Design Award 2018, and Civic Trust Award 2019.
